this coil is off my 98 4 stroke johnson 15 rope start, the picture shows ohm values from my ohmmeter. open indicates no ohm reading at all. is this thing dead?

thank you, chris m.

Your readings a-b are within spec 2300 + or - 300 ohms. even though your c-d reading is a little low that should be 0.28 + or - 0.05 the coil should operate. what problem are you having?

i have no spark at all on either plug. 98 4stk J15/ rope start. i put in 2 new iridium plugs gapped perfectly and new wires and boots in. there is darn near nothing else to the electrical system except the solid state winding stator that checks out and the optical cdi that i can't check. i even popped the flywheel off expecting to find a condenser and pulser like my older suzuki, but no, must be part of the pack. frustrating and there's noone close that works on these. the e-shut off checks out fine.
my meter only reads down to tenths of an ohm.
thanks, chris m.

Have you tried cleaning the optical eye? Remove the sensor wheel and check for damage, especially where the top slots are located. Sometimes the wheels will break out where the windows overlap. Check the sensor eyes for dirt, grease, etc. If you have to clean it, use denatured alcohol and a Q-tip. Do not use any other cleaning agent because damage to the optical lens will occur. Tried checking the cranking voltage at the battery? Is it below 11 volts?

Disconnect the boat side harness and connect a remote starter unit. Check for spark. If the engine has spark, check the boat side harness?s Black/Yellow wire for shorts to ground. Also try disconnecting the 4-pin connector on the port side of the power pack and see if the spark returns. If it does, use an multi meter set to Ohms and see if the Black/Yellow wires are shorted to engine ground.

thanks, but again, this is a rope start engine, there is no battery or harness that i am aware of. i see two possibilities for what might be the optical eye, one is a little glass bead on the back of the pack itself, the other is a black plastic end cap on two yellow wires that has two little holes in the end of it. it is only attached by a plastic tie and could be a mispointed eye? i wouldn't know what either of them would be reading other than maybe some electromagnetic field impuse? i am having difficulty in reading my test instruments while i am 'cranking the rope' to generate e.
