over the years I have replaced gearcases on my outboards. the reasons vary from fishing line violating the seal, to hitting wood and bending the prop shaft.The power head has sensors for early detection of problems so why not the lower unit.

Most problems with lower units are from abuse or<br /> lack of maintenance.In 50+ years of boating<br /> I have had one lower unit failure from a comeplete lack of maintenance.And one shift dog<br />failure and this includes lots of teenage operation.This may be an exception but I think<br /> Most lower units should be trouble free if<br /> given regular maintenance. Unfortunately when we buy a used motor we dont know what kind of care and use it has had.

CDI / Rapair does make a lower unit monitoring device. A neat deal.<br /><br />Good luck!
