Can a woman front a real rock band in 2007?
A few have done it over the years, can it be done again?

Take a listen to these 2 songs, from a band called "All Envy Aside."
They won the MTV-u Best Band on Campus contest last year, picking up $25 grand and a video deal in the process.

Their music is high energy guitar based rock, reminiscent of early seventies hard rock. A basic 4 piece band that makes music.
They've been giving their music away on the internet, and have been scoring in the top 20 on several download sites like Garageband, for 6 months. nnnnnnnn

They also have a new cd that they are selling, which is very good.
I think they have some skills, only time will tell if they can hone them into hits.

Here are two of the 18 songs available for free on their website.

Burning Again

Ode - finishes with a pretty decent guitar solo.

So, if you are into rock music, give them a listen, and tell us what you think.

Not bad...

She sounds a little too "pop" to be "rock", but that's just me..

The teenage thru mid 20's female demographic would probably eat it up tho...

Good end solo on the second one..... very Clapton-esque... to a point...

Clean guitar. She was OK but lacked a real "edge."

Would probably sound better live with a few drinks.

Re: Can a woman front a rock band?

Good question.

My honest opinion, I believe their audience would be limited. Even more so than a male singing the same genre.

Those few that have made it in the past, Heart, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Grace Slick were ok. They never achieved the status anywhere near male lead groups of their same era and genre. Although Grace Slick came very, very close. Starship and Airplane were very good......White Rabbit = excellent.

Reasons, I believe those were expressed above.

I like it! Good stuff. Thanks!
They are a local band (Milwaukee) for me. I'll have to keep an eye open for them. Maybe they'll play Sumerfest.

The last new band I liked had a female lead too. Evanescence. http://www.evanescence.com/
A little harder, kind of Goth, but a great voice.

I agree with all of the above.

And just to clarify, these songs are some of their earlier works that are free on their website. The songs on their cd, have a more professional polished sound. On some of the songs her vocals are very wild and edgy, but the songs are not very pleasant to listen to for an old guy that likes to hear a melody.

Everyone seems to have the same opinion on her voice.
Good point snapperbait, but I think a hot looking chick and some screaming guitars may keep a few guys listening for a while to.

Her voice does grow on you after you listen a few times.
I listened to them a few times last week, then yesterday, I caught myself humming them while at work. I too would like to see them live, I hear the shows are very guitar oriented. I've heard the 4-5 minute studio version, now I want to hear the 8 minute live version.

Oh, did I fail to mention that the lead guitarist is my cousin's son? :)

Both of the guitarists have engineering degrees too.

Bekosh, they played at Waterfest in Oshkosh with Joan Jett, and the Smithereens last year.
And they played Summerfest too.

Re: Can a woman front a rock band?

I like her voice (minus the heavy breaths in the beginning of the first one) and the solo, but I am confused about something. There are no pictures or acknowledgements about her on the site . . . I also agree that there is some Pop going on there, but it is different enough to crossover, which is huge if you ask me. Frankly she reminds me of Avril Lavigne. Despite her idiocy or lipsyncing, or air gutiaring or whatever it is, I think she was/is good.

Also, the one chick that comes to mind that was missed above is Chrissie Hynde. She also plays the guitar which IMH sexist Opinion is a turnoff . . . It's not right, but I admit it. I would say that The Pretenders are borderline, if not a bona fide, Supergroup and must come to the front of the chick list.

Re: Can a woman front a rock band?

You really have to download some of the other songs to get a feel for their sound, and her different singing styles. Just remember that the free stuff on the site is from 2001-2005, before they inked their record deal. So those songs are not as polished, and the recordings were not top notch.

I really don't understand why they don't have more info about her on the site, or a few more photos. They did put her naked body on the album cover.
Her name is Amanda Tvedt

She is definitely featured in the video of "Burning Again".
You can find a link to it on the multimedia page of their site.

Here is their MySpace site:

Here are some band photos.

Re: Can a woman front a rock band?

Yes I know the thread is 4 years old, but this is an update.

Well. the band fizzled after some problems with the lead singer.

Reset, new name, World Minus One, add a keyboardist, replace the singer.
They picked up Sara Brauer in October of 2009, and have been playing SE Wisconsin since January of 2010. She is a less dramatic performer, not so artsy.

Fast forward to January 2011, Sara Brauer makes the cut on American Idol and goes to Hollywood.
She is cut during the group performances.

Heads back to Milwaukee to the band.

They win the WAMI award for 2011 Hard Rock Artist of the Year at the 31st Annual WAMI Awards.

Personally, I think they could lose the keyboards.

Coolio! I still have All Envy Aside on my MP3 player and wondered what happened to them.

Listening to the songs WMO has on their site right now and I like it.
