Camping on the Mississippi River in Wisconsin

A couple friends and I want to go camping on the Mississippi River and would like to launch the boat about 4 miles north of Buffalo City, WI. Is there any place you can go camp for free? Like on some island or is that not legal? Thanks in advance for any information.

We have done it a few times in the La Crosse area. Down here all of the islands are public access and you are free to camp where ever you can find a spot.

I have not ventured that far north (yet) so I don't know of any specific spots ideal for camping, but it shouldn't be too much problem finding something. Although, if you're thinking this weekend on holiday weekends the spots do become scarce pretty quick.
