Can anyone recommend a few good places to camp (tents) on the Lake Winnebago chain? Campsites right next to the water are preferred.

There is a group of us looking to camp/boat near Lake Winnebago. I've seen High Cliff State Park on the East side of Winnebago, but am hoping to camp on the west side or on one of the smaller lakes. I have the idea that Winnebago can get pretty choppy due to it's size, so we'd like to have easy access to Lake Poygan or Lake Butte des Mortes so we can avoid some of the chop. Thanks!

I've never tent camped anywhere on the chain but here's a good place to start.
Google Map-Lake Winnebago Camping
For places right on the water, I've heard good things about Kalbus Country Harbor on the main lake. It's only about 5 miles from the river in Oshkosh.
Away from the big lake, there are several on the Wolf River near the Fremont area. Wolf River Campgrounds I know that Hahn-A-Lulu, Blue Top, Triangle Farms, Red Banks & Yogi Bear Jellystone all have tent camping.

Another good place to ask would be at http://www.boatingwinnebago.com/. There is a pretty active forum of boaters that run all over the system. It's run by a friend of mine and I help maintain the Boating Hot Spots Map.

Enjoy.

High Cliff State park is on the north east part of the main lake. Hard to get into though.

Just remember that those lakes are very shallow.

True, but they have plenty of depth for most boats, and even big cruisers are fine so long as they stay in the marked channels. With the group I usually hang with, my 21 footer is one of the smallest. One of my friends runs a 34X Silverton (40' overall) with inboards drafting over 4'.

I've found that the Garmin website has a really good tool for previewing the Wisconsin Lake Master charts that they sell. You can zoom in and check the detail of the charts before you buy. You could also use it to familiarize yourself with the area before jumping in. ;)
