In the process of choosing a couple of downriggers for my aluminum 16' Deep V and am not sure what is needed. How deep do you need to go for trout on L.O.? How much cable is needed? How much weight? What about side planers? Are they needed as well?

Also what trolling speeds work best? My little 9.8 kicker ticks along very happily at around 1 knot (maybe less) but is this too slow?

I'm looking at the Scotty 1060 and 1085 dowriggers right now, both manual. Anyone have experience with either? They both look fairly compact and my boat's not very big. Don't want downriggers that are almost as big as the boat.

Hey Mellowyellow! You're in my neck of the woods. Seem to recall you posting on trolling for trout on L.O. What're your thoughts on the subject? I normally fish out of Sodus Bay.
Bob
