From what I have read you fish for muskies and I have recently found out some of the rivers here where I live are stocked with muskies.
Gonfishn has got me interested in fishing for these so bass pro shop is having a sale turkey weekend and am going to purchas some lures.
My question is do you perfer the mepps or the bucktail when fishing for muskies in the spring.

Re: calling J B

I catch more muskys on my special lure (Esox Doom)made from a Mepps than anything else, Bubbakat.

Second is probably the Mepps Musky Killer, and third would be a Bagley DB3 diver. I also like to toss a 18S or 18GFR original Rapala.

I don't object to those big, heavy musky lures. They catch fish, but when I go out I am going to cast several thousand times before I come in and my old back can't do that with heavy lures and a cue stick. One to 1-1/8oz. lures are about my limit except for a few casts at an active fish that wont bite.

I believe that the number of fish I catch is directly proportional to the number of casts I place in fertile waters.

In the Spring muskys prefer smaller baits, like the Mepps. Save the big lumber to troll in the Fall.

Good luck. :)

Re: calling J B

Bubba, sorry for honing in our your question to JB, but wanted to add my 2 cents to the gator question. Around these parts, we do well trolling - spring, summer, and fall. Best time to troll, from about 10:00 am to 2:00 pm - get more gators then than any other time of the day. Guess that is because we are trolling and the gators have headed to deeper water. So, we will hunt bass and strippers till 10, then go for the real fish!

Usually about 8 man/hours per 40+ inch gator is expected, but they are so fun to bring in. Will feel like you snagged the bottom till the bottom starts moving! Then hang on!

These parts we seem to have the best luck with the old red head/white body/sparkle flecked 7 inch Swim Whiz (either solid or jointed). Next is the 7 inch Rapala (perch is the prefered color), followed by the old Dare Devil spoon and then the Mepps spinners.

Enjoy the gator hunting!

i also prefer smaller lures in any kind of fishin'... it just works for me...

i catch/caught my biggest fish on my smallest junk...

if you fish with smaller stuff,,, you'll catch fish you weren't even fishin' for...
an heck,,, i don't hate that alittle bit..

Squirrel Burts,Swim Whizzes,Terminators,Believers,Hog dawgs and many more..To a gator hunter it means only one thing..
After getting BubbaKats email and telling me about those swimming logs in his river I may have to Take him up on his offer before March..

I caught nine gators this year(counting the little one) and with some finger counting I figured I invested well over 100 hours in the pursuit of this warrior.
Many don't aggressively hunt the Musky because of the time involved before you trigger one and the follows you see but no strikes.

Should you use JerkBaits,Spinners,Topwaters,or live bait. It all depends on time of year, temps and terrain. They are not schoolers and tend to be loners.

Below are some of my favorites..The top lure is over 11" long. I do a half and half..Cast some and troll..Try and throw some of these lures for eight hours. Just ask Neaumanns..he got a taste of it this past summer..Having a young arm sure does help..

Curious to see what techniques some of you use and what you look for when after these gators..
That's the one, Bubbakat.

The Mepps Black Fury blade and body with the firetiger tandem spinnerbait skirts on the far right is one of JB's Esox Doom.

Catches a lot of BIG smallies and walleyes, too. :)

Re: calling J B

Even though I haven't got to use your lure yet JB I thought I would give it an honorable mention here..The Lure at the bottom is one I sent JB to try. This ones trolls pretty good..As you can see size doesn't matter as long as the warrior takes a liking to it...My approach to size of lure used is how sore I want my arm to be the next day..

Re: calling J B

I would suggest LadyFish that a matching pair of JBs Escox Doom lures would better fit because most of the other lures are over 11" long..Also if ya run outa bait you could take one off and try one.. :D

LOL take the barbs off and viola. Surely I can't be the only fisherwoman who thinks lures are pretty. We may have started something here. :)

Ahoy LadyFish.

Had a lady fishing companion who filed the barbs and points off a pair of #0 Mepps Black Fury spinners (very small) and wore them in her pierced ears.

Got a lot of comments and looked great. :)
