Howdy fellow virginian :) I live in southwest virginia in the Roanoke / Salem area. Spend most of my time on the James River and the New River mainly. With a few occasional trips to Smith Mountain, Claytor, And Kerr. :)

Re: Calling all VA fishers

Hey Neighbors. I'm in Northern VA and I'll fish any river, lake, stream, or pond. This year I think I'm going to spend most of my time between my new favorite, the Potomac River at Algonkian and my old favorite, Fountain Head (which gets worse and worse every year). I'm going to try Occoquan again but there are a lot of big boats there that push little guys like me around.

I fish mostely for Bass but after reading this forum more and more, catfish are starting to look pretty.

Where in VA are you?

Man you are pretty close to some great cat fishing. The lower end of the james by Richmond is great. I usually make at least one trip a weekend during the Summer. We use primarily live shad. And large circle hooks with fantastic success. :)

Hey Hot Rod - Just finished replying to your other post. Probably think I'm trying to be a know-it-all. I ran several trot lines on Lake of the Ozarks when I was a kid. Just a piece of advise. Running a trot line by yourself can be very dangerous. If the drop line slips, you can get a hook in your hand that's attached to several hundred feet of weighted line. A properly laid trot line is under tension and believe me when something goes wrong, it happens fast and at 2AM in the morning, you have no one to help. Never run a line at night by yourself. If there's anyone out there that disagrees with me, please let me know.
Irish eyes

Sorry Hot Rod and other readers - above was a reply to a previous post regarding trot lines; not the above.
Irish Eyes

Hello neighbors,
I live near Rocky Mount which is in Franklin County. You know, the "Moonshine Capital". I fish Philpott lake for Walleye and Smith Mountain lake for Stripers & Crappie. I go to Kerr and to
Moomaw 2-3 times a year for a change in scenery .
JD

Re: Calling all VA fishers

You ought to come over and try some flathead fishing on the james. We ( myself and my fishing partner ) go at least 10 or 20 times during the Summer. Nothing like hooking into a big ole 20 or 30 lb flathead :)

The James is started to heat up. Fished yesterday for about 5 hours. Landed 7 smallies biggest being 5 lbs 2 oz. smallest was just a hair under a pound. Had several more bites that I missed. Hooked a gargantuan flat head. But with 4lb test I didn't stand a chance :)

raymondmoyer, i hear the channel cats are most abundant on the james. i have also heard that they catch pretty big blues on the james, but they are caught closer to the coastal waters outside of richmond.

Yes sir there are some monster channel's and blues towards the coast. My fishing partner laneded a 49lb blue last year in scottsville on the James. Flathead's seem to be the most abundant on my end of the james. THere is nothing like fighting a 20lb flathead that has spent his entire life swimming in strong river currents. :)

Good to see so many Virginians on here. I fish the lower Chesapeake Bay, Kerr Lake, Blackwater& Nottaway rivers with varying degrees of success. Anyone have any tips on trolling for stripers on Kerr. Also looking for public boat ramps near Hopewell Va. been wanting to try my luck with those huge cats.

I fish the Lower Rappahannock with the kids. Have a heck of a lot to learn, though.

Jinx

Re: Calling all VA fishers

at the expense of being politically incorrect, a''fisher'' is a medium sized furbearing animal frequenting the forest, diet mainly squirrels, small birds and fish.
A ''fisherman'' [ male or female of the species] frequents all known water courses world wide, and when not present there, can be found in most tackleshops, or watching TV shows devoted to that pursuit. While some people accuse them of out right lying, they typically suffer from the innability to accurately judge weights and measurements, but never erring on the low side.
They are frequently accused[ also quite falsely] of not listening or paying attention to anyone when in the vacinity of lakes or streams where trout are observed to be rising.
These-are FISHERMEN!!!

Hi guys, from outside of Richmond. I fish primarly in the bay and rappahannock river. I just bought one of those new plastic boats and am anxious for the weather to improve enough to get out.
