I own a 1978 Starcraft islander. It's presently in storage. Iam looking to add a radar/fishing arch to the old girl for this up coming season. Only problem I don't have access to her until April to get the measurements I need. Iam hope someone can help me out. Iam looking to mount it off the gunwale instead of the side mount. This particular year the riser off the gunwale extends all the way to the stern instead of half way like other years not sure if the beam is different. I want to mount it just as the Bimini top stops. The arch iam looking at is of the universal type that has a horizontal adjustment of a few inches. If I could get some dimensions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hiya philly and big welcome to iboats!

My particular Islander has changed her shape significantly but I still might be able to give you a hand.

So, exactly which dimensions are you in need of? Beam at midships?

Thanks for the welcome. Looking for midship. Courious, whatcha mean you have changed her shape significantly? Would you have any pix's for the new look? I see your from Michigan, so iam to assume you have it rigged to troll the great lakes.

Well, first, I chopped off those gunwale risers. I hated them. Getting in and out of the boat was such a pain.

Then later on down the road, while I loved the cabin, due to another big cabin boat being hauled home, I didn't need the Islander cabin anymore. So, that got chopped off too:becky:

The Islander will mainly be for family fun, but, be rigged for fishing as well.

You can take a look at the Islander thread in my signature to check the route I took with her.

I'll grab a measurement for ya here in just a bit, hang tight....

OK, at midships, right where your cabin bulkheads are (cabin walls), you should be right about 89.5", rubrail to rubrail.

Just let me know if you need anything different that that eh.

Love the site. Purchased my 78 islander last fall and looking to get her ready to chase salmon around the great lakes this spring. When I get a chance I will post some pix's to share with the community. Quite the rebuild you pulled off there jasoutside with your 76. Here's a pix of what I want to install on mine. I know the boat in the picture has the diferent gunwales, but the location of the mounting is where iam looking to place mine.So as the bimini top ends I want the arch to end as well.

Fixed it ^^^ for ya.....

'Cause you've certainly pulled some stuff off  gunwales, cabin, parts that had already been re-done, etc.......

Grandad sure is the craftsman. My skills are far from that. Looking at the same idea except not rigging the bimini to the arch. Gonna buy a out of the box universal one from fish on sports (Uni- Arch Captains Package " FREE SHIPPING"). It comes in different widths. Just trying to figure our which width will work with my 78' islander.

it would probably be a REAL good idea to beef heavily under the gunwales where you plan to bolt it....like maybe some oak 1x6 about 18-24" long. ??? this thing will want to rock and roll, and with the weight of a radome on top........

Thanks jasoutside for the measurement.

Good idea never thought of that. Gotta think with rod holders fullly loaded and 3-4' rollers there would would be some significant stress on the arch. I have some 1/2 aluminum plate I could put in there. Thanks barato2
