I just heard on the radio that all the California coast and part of Oregon will be off limits for both commercial and recreational fishing for salmon.
It seems that the salmon population has imploded.
Interestingly, most commercial fisher men support the ruling.
Californians if you heard anything about this, can you fill us in with the nitty gritty?

From my understanding it's all because of a very low return of Sacramento Jack Salmon. Here in Southern Oregon I've heard that there will be no commercial season and a limited sport season... open weekends only and 900 fish limit. That should last about 1 weekend :)

I feel with you guys.If you really feel the need for a salmon on the other end of the line, you are more than welcome to share the wealth in Lake Ontario where we have Chinook,Coho and Atlantic salmon just waiting to share the table.

I recall during the El Nino years, the governor of Washington State (Dan Evans) gave a speech saying Congress needed to pass a law lowerering Pacific Ocean Temperatures 2 degrees.

Obviously he was being facetious, but his point was that sometimes it is simply beyond anyone's control, and hopefully in a year or two or whatever, ocean conditions will improve and fish stocks will return.

Unfortuneately this is a much more complex issue. There are many different factors involved. The low dissolved oxygen "dead zone" likely played a big role, as well as other factors such as how easy it is for them to get upstream to spawn (dams and other man-made or natural obstructions can greatly impact fish populations), the water quality of the river itself (pollution or even too much decaying organic matter in the water can kill off a good portion of the fry and leave future spawns with fewer adults to spawn), then there's even the riddiculous things no one can control (such as local weather patterns that may confuse the adults and prevent them from finding the mouth of the river), or ocean conditions (such as if the salmon are maturing during a period when there is very little food available for them, they may wait an extra year to spawn), or naturally occuring diseases and parasites that can virtually wipe out entire populations of fish in one outbreak. There are simply too many factors involved here. While the limitation on the season will no doubt help, it may not make enough difference to sustain the population. Only time will tell whether or not we'll have a wild salmon population out there in the future. In the meantime I think they need to examine the problem more comprehensively and see if there are other steps that can be taken to help ensure a good fishery.

It is a sad state of affairs, however we can still cling to our Bibles and guns.

I personally believe it's todays technology that lets fish factories follow the salmon around the open ocean. All satelite info should be blocked to fishing fleets. Jam all comunication except weather. This might even help the bluefin and other species.

I hope so too, but I don't see them improving anytime soon unfortunately.
