I am ready to rebuild the carbs on my 1983 75hp Johnson. My OMC manual advises using an OMC float gage to set the floats proper height. I am wondering if there is another way to set the float position. I don’t have the gage and want to get started. Should I order and wait or is there another good way. Thanks once again!!!

With the carb body upside down, set the float parallel to the gasket surface. Make sure it travels far enough to open the inlet too.

Good luck!

Make certain the float drop is not so great that the needle jams. A good way to check operation of the needle & seat and the float before reassembly is to simply invert the carb and blow into the fuel inlet fitting. Don't press on the float. Its weight is sufficient to close the needle. If air is passing, the needle is not seating properly. With the carb upright, the needle should be open. Make sure every passage is free of varnish & crud.

As Dhadley said! adjust it parallel with the carb body. As for the drop, if the stop on the float arm won't stop it, the bottom of the float bowl will. It won't jam the needle.
