My trailer (Karavan) has a cable on the winch. I see many people talking about straps.
Which is better? Thanks.

I prefer the strap. Never binds and never cuts what it touches.

Re: Cable -v- Strap

I, too, have a strap. But both have their drawbacks. Like JB says, the cable has a tendency to bind under itself and cut what it touches. Also, if just one strand happens to break, it will undoubtably find my finger (red ink!!). On the other hand, the strap will wear and fray. I don't know, but would it be a good idea to trade ends on a strap every few years or so? Or would it just be better to let it wear out and replace it when due?
Brian

I perfer the Strap also just make sure you get one heavy enough for your working load IE: a 3000 pound strap is good for a 2000 pound boat, must consider stretch and pulling loads. They only downfall to the strap is the SUN when left out, My wife cured that problem by sewing a neat little sock that goes over the exposed strap between the bow hook and winch, and a little hat that fits over the winch from some light canvas material 5yrs strap still looks new no fray or fade.

Glad you decided on the strap. I've had both, and I've had both break. When the strap broke, well - it just broke. When the cable broke (many years ago) it came within a few feet of hitting my wife in the head. That cable just went flying - extremely dangerous. I'll only use a strap. ;)
Of course, any signs of fraying on strap or cable and it's time for a replacement.
