about 2 yrs ago I bought (and my mechanic installed) a new cable and steering system for my '99 fiberglass skiff with 90hp merc. It worked fine for 2 seasons, but recently it siezes while underway. I stop, tilt up then down, and it works fine...until the next port turn. It turns fine while slipped, but put it underway and it locks up again. Twist in the steering cable?

you probably need to remove the cable from the motor tilt tube, clean and lube. they do require maintenance. you may have to lift the motor off the boat to get the cable out.

Thanks Tashasdad, I thought that too, but why does the steering work fine while the boat is slipped, and seize up only when underway? If it's just a lube problem, wouldn't it seize up all the time?

because in the slip the is not tention, or force from the motor. it could also be a bad swivel base of the motor binding up, when the power is applied.
