Cable Modem Recommendations?

Might sign my Daddy up for Cable. They have a pretty irresistable 6 mo program. Comcast must be trying to pump up their customer base prior to selling off their cable system. AT&T did something similar before they sold to Comcast. Then after Comcast took over, they unwound all the package deals that got me to sign up with AT&T.

Well, on to the point. I originally purchased a Linksys or D-link cable modem for myself. After a short time, I began to get knocked off the internet repeatedly. Comcast came out and checked everything and said it was a modem issue. I got one of their Motorola modems and have had no issues since. This was 5-6 years ago.

As this all will initially be a gift to my Dad, I a) do not want to sign up for a $5 mo modem rental, nor do I want to pay Comcast $99 to buy their modem outright.

Are there any suggestions for a reliable modem I could buy at Fry's et al?

In general, most all modems work just fine, brand name and cheap chinese imports alike. Most of them have the same internals anyway. My RCA modem has been working perfectly with comcast for about 5 years now - my ******* digital cable goes out all the time, but the internet is always up.

Motorola makes them that can be bought from best buy and such. They are called Surfboard Cable modems. These are pretty common I think.

I'd just but it from them. No hassel and it will work, if not they will better to deal with to replace it.

The problem is, if they're charging $99, they're ripping him off.

A quick look on ebay shows a lot of modems for about $10.

I'll try my local Best Buy. Don't have time for ebay. Got to sign up for this special 6 mo offer by tomorrow. They're gonna want to set up an installation time, so I'll have to have the modem in hand.

They will have what you need. We sell the Motorola surfboard, and it should be selling at $70 right now.

I have bought a couple at half that price and have had them fail. IMHO this is one of thse instances where its worth the money.

Ebay is good for some stuff, but often I find having the product in my hands, with no shipping prices/issues, and seeing exactly what I get is worth a little extra $

And you can buy a potato chip theat looks like Jay Leno, you get what you pay for. Plus no warranty and no tech support and you don't know if it works or not. Better to pay now than pay latter when it comes to electronics. Just my .02

A cable modem is not something you need much support or warranty for, and you can get all the free support you need in thousands of online forums like this. But, even in the store they're cheaper than $99, as Pony said.

Frys.com has a D link for $65, don't know if they have the same thing in store. My D link router has been running perfectly just as long as the RCA modem...

I'm not very familiar with the concept of buying your own cable modem. Our local cable Internet provider is Charter (terrible service). They always provide the modem. Around year 2000 they used COM21 equipment (proprietary I understand) and eventually tried to transition to "Docsis" compatible equipment. They still provided them to customers, but I think those are the ones people have to buy in some areas. The Motorola surfboard was one of the modems they were distributing when they first started migrating to the new system.

So is it still "Docsis" or is there something later and greater?

Just make sure that whatever you get will work with the provider! I have the motorola surfboard, not a glitch one with it (once they got the line/s working, had not been used in (who knows)had sverale breaks and an amp one the line went out twice in 2 weeks! (thats what they told me) anyway it works now!

This morning, I'm back leaning toward the DSL. Quest will sell their modem for $59.95. so I would propably go with that.

BY Verzion is charging 35.00 a month for 3 megs down and 1.5 up with the modem and unlimited terminal's or comps.........with a 1 yr subscription.....
