Cabin light switches - instead of power panel

my least favorite thing on the Doral is the interior light switch--there is none, we have to use the power panel. guests don't like to open the door to the power panel and i don't want them opening it either.

has anyone removed the 110v/12v power panel of a Doral Elegante (2006)? i'm wondering if i can wire the 12v switched side of the power panel to a light switch above the panel. meaning, i splice the wire after the power panel light switch and insert a new switch that i can mount near the hand rail of the companionway. so i would leave the power panel switch on, but can still turn it off/on with the exterior switch without opening the door. being a geek that i am, of course i would find a switch that i can control remotely from multiple spots on the boat (and maybe prevent drilling into finished wood. *cringe*).
