The owner's I've talked to love their boats. They are coming out with a 25' cat that I intend to look at. The folks at the C-Dory owner's site will be happy to answer all your questions. Nice boats

Hmmm... what would it take to get you into one?

Honestly, the prices dont look that bad. I do admit... used boats are holding their value well.

It does seem that C Dory owners are a faithful loyal bunch. That sure bodes well for the boats!

Re: C-Dorys pros and cons(comments)

they are made near my hometown! they are efficient. doesnt need much motor to cruise. saw a ~20 footer on plane with like a 60hp honda single. but the get much of their efficiency from being very narrow which makes them rock very badly from the sides which i was also noticing the other day out on the sound. facing the waves though, they look very seaworthy with the big bow. they are a pretty bare bones boat though with not much for accomodations equipped by the factory. more of a fiberglass shell.

Re: C-Dorys pros and cons(comments)

Read the book "River Horse" by William LeastHeat Moon. He went by water from the Astoria Column, NY, to Astoria, Oregon, and used a C-Dory for most of the trip. It's an unwitting nice testimonial about the boat.

I've seen lots of them around here, and they are higher priced than most boats their size, but they appear to be well designed, and can use much lower HP than most. The reason is the V-bow fades into a shallow stern, so there was some pounding on the boat I rode on. We just slowed down, and it was fine.

Rabid is right...they have a fanatical owners' group, and many appear to move up to another C-Dory when they sell.

Re: C-Dorys pros and cons(comments)

Thanks for you comments... keep them coming!

I should have prefaced... I own a dealership that is looking for a boat like C-Dory to fit a potentially growing market.

C-Dorys do not have a strong dealership network here in the midwest, although there are a fair number of boats here. Most are used as trailerable cruisers as opposed to fishing boats. They do have strong dealer support in the northwest(not unexpectedly)

I am hoping for more comments from non-owners group participants. (The owners groups are decidedly prejudiced, and with good reason. Most are extremely happy with their boats.)

I am sure you'll have buyers for all the 22's the factory will let you have. People after a C-Dory will travel to get the one they want. I think the new 25' Cat will be popular also. Another adament owner's group is Arima.

What engine lines do you handle?

Mercury and BRP for outboards.

It's clear the 22 is the most popular. I am suprised that the one that seems the hardest to find is the 16. I could have sold a dozen 16s if I only had them. That was what triggered me looking at the boats originally.

I guess if you have to work really hard to find someone that has a bad, or even neutral comment, then that tells you what you need to know about the boats!

Chances are, buyers will want Honda, Yamaha, or Suzuki before Etec or Merc. Not bashing, just seems so from what I've seen.

Re: C-Dorys pros and cons(comments)

I know what you mean... Most are equipped with Honda. that is because of C-Dorys pre-rig aggreements and not because of buyers choice.

Just recently they have signed on with BRP and all reports are the engines are well recieved.

In our area (Indiana/Midwest the Merc & BRP are more popular because they're made here, not neccesarily because they're better engines.

In fact, I believe because of the better competition, the domestic engine builders have had to step up and build better engines also. The cycle of competition has made all the outboards better overall than they have ever been before(in almost every aspect) It's because these engines are so good that we can even consider an outboard to be a good choice for a "cruiser"! Never before have they been reliable enough to make a "passage".

The marina I use has 80 or so Etecs on their rentals and are very pleased so far. Let us know if you take on C-Dory, I am interested in that new catamaran.

A freind of mine has one. He loves it. If you go to the c-dory's owners group web site he has the Minnow.

He has had some problems with his, but C-dory does stand behind thier product. This winter they are going to pay to have his transom rebuilt, at the repair place of his choice!

Check out the owners group, they seem to have a good repore with the factory.

Re: C-Dorys pros and cons(comments)

I belong to the two major owners groups. Most of the discussion there is pro-.

I was hoping to find owners other than the group members who might have more objective comments.

I am not looking for negative comments alone, but if you want real information, you can't always get it from the fanatics. They tend to lean towards the positive(or else they wouldn't be fanatics... now would they :) )

Doesn't bother me, but once potential boaters hear the s word -* about a boat, they run like a Tsunami is about to strike.

*-slow, ie WOT is less than 50mph.

Re: C-Dorys pros and cons(comments)

Sorry for the late reply; I've been fishing. In fact, one of the boats I've fished on is a 10-yr. old 22' short cabin/angler. He retrofitted it with an 90-Etec, and loves the engine. We trolled all day in Puget Sound (with a sea anchor to slow us down) and the engine never skipped or plugged up, unlike my carb Johnson. I think we used 8 gallons all day. Once done fishing, we ran 32 mph (GPS), or about 3/4 throttle back in. (By the way, ain't too many people (i.e., none!) running 50 mph on Puget Sound.)

Most the the C-Dories I see here are 22' & 25', but that also may be because most of my boating is done on the Columbia River and Puget Sound, and with the plethora of PacNW-produced welded AL boats in 16'-20', I suspect the C-Dory is considered too costly. On the other hand, there are few mass-produced boats (Arima?) similar to the larger C-Dory. Obviously, the PacNW market is different than yours.

If I were to buy one, I'd buy the 25' long cabin, but that's just because we boat year round here, and about 6 of those months, it's nice to have the dry comfort of a cabin. My next motor, regardless of the boat, will be an Etec.
