I have a johnson 2001 50 hp. Power tilt is shot due to sinking. Shop wants $1300 to fix it. Is there a way to bypass the hydraulics and just manually tilt the motor??

What could be shot from sinking ?? It runs in the water anyway. Maybe a second opinion from a different shop ?? What's it doing ?? Did the whole boat sink ??

i doubt they want $1300 to fix it. They probably want $1300 to replace it. "Fixing" it should be few hundred plus a trim motor if needed. or, you could do it yourself for under $100 plus trim motor. difficulty on a 50hp system is somewhere between auto brake and auto carburetor. good instructions and/or manual is key.

Before doing anything.... trace the wires leading from the PTT electric motor to its connector and unplug it.

Connect two jumper wires from the battery to those two electric motor wires. If the electric motor works, reversing the wires would make it run in the opposite direction.

If this test results in having the electric motor running, and possibly having your PTT assembly raising and lowering your engine (assuming the manual release valve is shut and the unit has fluid), the problem is within the related wiring which is understandable..... but not the PTT assembly. Let us know what you find.

what joe said with one addition. Go ahead and take loose the four screws holding trim motor down and look for water in your hydraulic oil. If there is no water in the oil then there is probably no need to do anything with hydraulics - just a motor and/or wiring should be enough. If there is water in oil then you should do a seal kit and wash out the system with mineral spirits during process.

Thanks for the tips. I understand there is a screw i can adjust to manually raise the motor. Which one is it? Do i need a special tool?
