buying used tohatsu 9.8 four stroke

new to boating have the chance to buy a 2004 9.8 four stroke for 900.00, seller states it has low hours and all the maint. records, seems like a good deal i just dont have alot of experience with the tohatsu brand. also would like to take this motor to canada on yearly trip and not sure if it has what it takes running 14' deep v boats with a heavy load 26 miles to a portage, once we get to cabins i'm sure it will work fine, also would like to get a second prop may'be something made for heavy loads any help would be great.

It's a ten hp engine and has the power of a ten. If you used a ten on the same trip in the pas,t this one will work just as well. If you used a 15 in the past, this one will disappoint you.

Yep, it's not a 15. There are several props available from Tohatsu, as well as HT props for slow-speed, hi-load applications. We put them on sailboats all the time. Of course those boats don't go over 7 or so knots. BTW, I would want well over $1,000 for that motor, if it is as clean as you say.

just got back form picking up the 9.8 four stroke, i'm really please with the shape its in few minor scratches props nick free, will be using it on a restricted hp lake in pa, not sure why so cheap but i'll take it. still not sure about taking to canada, my brother takes his lowe 16' with a 25 yamaha four stroke up and the rented 15 we used were not much slower, my only real worry is the trip in to the cabins, not a speed freak but i dont want to overload the motor, and i'm sure i'll like the four stroke for trolling much more the motors up there are newer yamaha's and are nice but the noise and fumes start to bother me after a few days, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, would like to get a second prop any suggestions thanks again.

Check the one that is on it and buy a spare that is 1" lower in pitch.
