Buying used Merc on E*bay

Just wanted to ask everyone's opinion on this. It seems they have a huge selection on motors here, but you never know what you are going to get. I prefer to shop online because of the selection instead of riding and burning gas going from marina to marina. Wondering everyone's recommendation about purchasing a used Merc 115-200hp from here. If you have purchase from here i would love to talk to you.

A lot depends on the amount of knowledge and experience you have with outboards,
like what size hammer is best...sorry, just a joke..

what tools you have, compression gauge, voltmeters etc etc

whether you are able to view it in person etc etc BEFORE bidding on it...
whether you can tell it's rough age just by looking at it as well as using it's serial number...

buying one without any of the above...and more... is dicey...

​​​​​​​i am looking at one its a 2004 125EXLPTO paints looks decent . They say the compression is 135 in all 4 cylinders that's good. Maybe i can get them to make a video doing a compression test and a start up in drum showing me it shifts without cutting out.

I have sold and bought on ebay. Normally if willing to take a chance, a video of the motor running and pics of the compression gauge during a compression test. Hower that is for old outboard under 30hp for fishing boats

I would rather put my own eyes on a larger motor

I wouldn't be against buying one on ebay but I would do so with the expectation of it being a project. I bought a lower off a marine wrecker on ebay. First one turned out to be a dud but my money was refunded no questions asked. Second one worked out well.
