Buying some Down Riggers

I started to get into fishing up here in upstate NY. I fish and boat near Lake Ontario and Canadaguia Lake. I was in a bait shop and the owner is closing down his store for good (retiring), he offered me $100 for 3 down riggers he was selling. I have been wanting to try for some larger than the many pan fish I have been catching.

1) Is this a good price? They look in good condition w/ analog counters on them
2) I own a cuddy with a swim platform, should I try rigging something up, or should I not bother? I was thinking of making a removable mount that goes where the cushions turn into a sun platform.

Thanks in advance,

What brand, how old, do they come with cable, manual or electric?

Sounds like a good deal to me. Check the prices for new ones to get a frame of reference. Penn, Walker and Scotty are the top 3 brands of riggers.

Lots of good trolling opportunities in your neck of the woods for trout, salmon and walleye:D

Sounds like a good deal but make sure the arm's are long enough to extend over your boat from where ever you plan to mount them. Also keep in mind to do Salmon/Trout fishing right you will need downrigger weights, downrigger releases, downrigger poles, trolling reels, assorted lures, and a good fishfinder.

Price sound s good. I had a Searay 180 and had my down riggers mounted to rod holder plate (removeable) I had enough room to mount a rod holder tube (flush mount) on each side of the boat. I could then slide the rod holder plate into the rod holders. My Cannon down rigger would clamp to the rod holder plate. I could use the fixed rod holders for flat lining as well. When not in use the rod holder tubes were a clean look and did not get in the way of family boating.

@ hostage, that's what I've heard too. Someone told me in no uncertain terms to stay away from Canon and anything that isn't Scotty or Penn.

I've been scouting used downriggers for a while and am interested in some Scotty 1101's for Puget Sound salmon trolling. I'd say find out the brand/model/age and what all extras he's letting go with them, and use the interwebs or gooooogle to research the value, for comparison.

Good luck and tight lines!
