Is buying older beter than buying newer? I know this question depends on many factors. But lets just say that your on Ebay and your looking for a 15 hp two stroke. You find the perfect one, lets say a 2004 15 hp johnson but it has a buy it now price of 1,300$. Disapointed you keep searching for that perfect outboard. Now you stumble upon a 1974 15 hp Johnson it has all of these great options like electric start and is pratically the same engine, same weight but a lower price lets say 650 by it now. And it runs and has no problems what so ever. The obvious decision is ofcourse the cheeper one. Well lets just say that money isn't a factor. Which one one would you buy and why.

Thanks, Dan

a 1974 is like new for a OMC unless someone used and abused it to death. For me Old is better just because its simpler easyer to work on and the older stuff was build alot tougher and could put up with some abuse. The newer stuff everything is made of plastic.I hered more then a few dealers say that.

Re: Buying older Over Newer

Just my goofy opinion:
If I was going to sink 1300+shipping for a motor I would want something either brand new and make payments on it and get a warranty, or something I could see run in person. Not some motor seen on ebay for that kind of price. Not that I don't like ebay, I've bought several there and was very pleased with them, but I bought motors from the 50's that even an idiot like me could work on. All of them needed it, too. If you'd consider a motor as old as a '74, I wouldn't count out a 60's or even late 50's OMC product. You can still get parts and there's plenty out there that still have a lot of life left in 'em. Besides, the motors from the late '50's are by far the prettiest. :)
Once again,
Just my opinion.
