Simple design, Durable, and very Reliable...and also fairly inexpensive. A very good choice.

Nav

As good as anything else you can find and usually a little less in price.

Hi Spoonriger,
Last year, a motorboat knocked my 4HP evinrude 2stroke into the bay. I replaced it with a Nissan(Tohatsu) 5HP 4 stroke. It vibrated so much that it is now in my garage. I replaced it with a used Johnson 4HP Deluxe 2 stroke which I love.

That is NOT an uncommon compalint. Even with the lower HP twin cyl. models.

Nothing idles as nice as a twin cyl. two stroke-in the lower HP models.. The higher HP (three/four cyl.)four strokes idle great.

I've never seen a 1-cyl that ran vibration-free.
It's too bad you have a new tohatsu in the garage. Why don't you sell it?

Re: buying a tohatsu

I have a 2004 9.8 Tohatsu as my kicker for trolling and I'm very happy with it.

I also have a 4HP Deluxe (a '91), and as Joey One points out it is smooth and quiet. At idle I find the Tohatsu is even quieter, it took a while for me to get used to hearing the sound of its peehole water hitting the lake over the sound of the engine.
