Buying a new low HP outboard. Need advice

Hi all,

We purchased a used 17' sailboat about a month ago, and have been having a multitude of problems with the motor that came with it. The previous owner CLAIMS that it was overhauled, and we're wondering in what year! He's out of reach and no longer lives in the same place. We're basically fed up with this 1989 Mercury Model 3.5, and have decided it's time to replace it.

Basically, we're in search of an inexpensive motor no more than 5 HP and no less than 3. We've never been able to open up the Merc all the way, but at half throttle, it was fast enough to do what it needs to. Don't need to have a speedboat, but I'll have to admit that the tow we got from a jetskier this afternoon, when it refused to start, was mighty nice!

I'm really just looking for a rough idea as to what I am looking at as far as cost. The dealer search begins on Friday, but I want to avoid being taken for a ride. Being an outboard novice, that would be very easy to accomplish.

Thanks so much! My e-mail address is ben@light-poet.com. An e-mail reply would be greatly appreciated.

Happy 4th of July, everyone! Stay safe.

-Benjamin & crew

Don't know what price range your looking for, but take a look at the Merc's, They probably have a few good prospects that are dependable and priced right. I've been pricing them for an upgrade.Take a look, see what you think! :)

mth-54 Pink at night sailors delight,Pink in the morning sailors take warning! ;)
