OK, I know it's short notice...I'm about to look at a 2000 Johnson 50 hp in about one hour. I'm looking for any hints from other with more experience as to what I should look for/at in this motor. I plan on doing a compression check, and looking at the lower unit oil.
Thanks!

2 stroke or 4 stroke, medic?

Don't worry about the compression numbers, as long as they are over about 100psi look for how close they match. +/- 10%.

Look for hours. In 2000 some of the OMC 2 strokes had some QC problems. If it has been run, say, 100 hours they have been fixed or never were there. If it has only 10 or 20 hours on it there might be an assembly problem still around.

Over 100 PSI and within 10% of each other. Check the lower unit fluid, too. Milky is bad. Black or clear is OK. ...

2 or 4 stroke..good question. Not sure . the model # is J50PLSSM. The motor is off the boat and on a stand. Compression check will be on cold engine. Do I leave plugs in when checking comp. on other cylinder? Also,controls are not hooked up. Specifically, how dow I "jump" the motor by using wires to the starter?

Re: buying a "new" johnson...

Actually, just checked another site and the "P" is Power tilt and trim. Another site said this indicated 3 cylinder, which I thought odd at the time..Probably just misread it.. Sorry... BTW-I thought you would have been there by now to look at it....

J= Johnson
50=HP
P=Power Tilt and Trim
L=Long Shaft 20"
SS= Year 2000
M=Manufactuer Code
