Howdy,
I am a real newby. I need a small motor for my 10ft porta-boat. I am thinking about buying a 86', suzuki, 2 stroke, 4hp, short shaft motor for $400 from a dealer. I saw the original box it was stored in. The motor looks unused, with the cover off there isn't a speck of grim or dirt on the engine. The "certified" mechanic said the gas was like varnish, but he had cleaned the carb, rings, pressure tested the lower unit and changed lub, and tested the compression and got 85. I live in dry air at 6000ft. Does this sound like a deal? What would I want the guy to guarantee? Thanks for the help. Bill

WOT Wide Open Throttle.

also you may wish to have a new pump inpeller installed, no way I would trust a piece of rubber that old. you may be able to make a deal that you pay parts and they install it. but the WOT rpm must be checked while on your boat in the water and rolling.
and trust me" certification" is sometimes meaningless. also applies to Drs and lawyers as well as outboard techs

Thanks for the added info Rodbolt. I can't wait to go crappie fishing this spring. Hope you enjoy lots of time on the water. Bill
