New 4 stroke Nissan
9.8hp,14 hours.2 wires connecting swivel bracket, lower unit etc.
I think these are just for corrosion protection.
However the paint or coating is melted off of them, they seem to be stainless and look heat discolored.
Any ideas ? ?

DHP

Run in salt water? Does the boat attach to shore power? Just a guess from left field, but it sounds like extremely bad wiring.

Thanks Paul,

Motor is 2 weeks old,no salt.Left field works sometimes,but not yet.No shore power,either.

The wires I mean just connect parts togeather, have no battery connections, just for corrossion prevention.

DHP

Yeah I figured chances were pretty remote. One last kick at it though - any possibility the starter current is running through the transom clamp or anything? IE, bad ground?

There's a short somewhere or....double check the grounds and make sure everything is tight. The CD ground wire would be my guess. But there is something screwed up for sure.

Thanks Guys,

I think you've solved this for me.Customer swears he did nothing.Well he did reroute the battery cables (also swears he did not cross polarize them). Then he noticed the burnt wires.

But if he cranked the motor with the ground wire off or loose, that would explain it.

Thanks,

DHP
