Yamaha uses 2 different ignition systems. Not sure which one you have, but be sure you use the OEM recommended spark plugs.....

Re: burning up NGK spark plugs every third trip

I had a similar problem on a 200 Yamaha. Found the plug wire is made with a little spring with a hook on the end as the connector to the plug. Well where the hook pokes thru the wire to make contact there was corrozion. WHat happens is a low speed you dont have the juice to overcome the resistance in the connection once you speed up you have enough juice to overcome it. All I had to do was pull the boot back and trime about 1/2" off the wire and rehook the little spring metal conector back in the wire. I had actually went out and bought a new coil/wire and found this after the fact. Tested the old coil/wire and it worked so I kept it as a spare.
