Burning through exhaust bellows

Hello,

I have a 1980 Mercruiser 228 (Chevy 305) than is running really hot on the starboard side. A couple of days ago it actually burned a hole through the starboard exhaust bellows than connects to the riser. I took the risers off both sides, soaked in muratic acid for a couple hours and put them back on. I connected a garden hose while they were off and water seemed to flow freely through without blockage.

Put on a new bellows and took it back out for a quick 5 minute stroll around the lake (less than 1500RPM) and the bellows & riser on the starboard side was too hot to touch. Port side felt fine. Manifolds and hoses feel cool on both sides.

Water impeller was new last fall. I'm not sure what else to do at this point? Take it in to a mechanic?

Re: Burning through exhaust bellows

I would have to say the exhaust elbow is plugged up and not letting water through. You have probably burned the inside of the new hose as well. If you have to soak the elbows to clean them, they are due to be replaced. It's not advisable to clean them, since when they get plugged up that's a warning they are dead.
