BURNED WIRING

My 1993 evinrude 70 hp outboard motor started chirping from the control box. I checked the water output and do not have the VRO connected any longer so thought there was a short somewehere. Got back to the ramp and found some of the wiring burned under the cowl. The engine continued to run well and still does, I won't run it until I get a new regulator. I cut and spliced the bad sections out and while looking over the rest of the wiring noticed the harness between the engine and control box was also starting to melt. I had to cut out 6' of wire there and resolder them together. They were melted where I had extra wire that was looped and tucked below deck. I could not find any abrasions anywhere but on the control wire most of the internal wires were fused together. The regulator tested bad so I don't know if the regulator caused this or something else. Also the grounding strap was melted between the engine and the mount inside of the cover. What would cause this???

Re: BURNED WIRING

A short could caused this a wire somehow is making contact where it is not suppost make contact or a bad compoent. This cause the wires to melt. If you did anythink before this happen to the wires then maybe it was wrong and you should double check it. If tried to fix them and accidently connected a wire to the wrong place it could cause this problem. Very important that charging wire and and the kill wire are not connected somehow.
I got a old boat and motor so was not worth to buy a new plug and wires.
So just rewire the basic to get to run. Which I bought a new key starter switch because was not sure about mine then without power to it ohm out and found which one to connect to start added a kill switch connected charing wire so when key was on it chaged
Sounds like at this point you have buy a new wire plug for your engine and everything or rewire like I did
or find the problem you have which is with a wire connected( a wire making contact with a wrong wire) where it not suppose or something is shorted started a part or maybe switch or in the control box somewhere. That what I think it could be.

This is just advice I giving to try help you. I will not be liable for wrong information.

You have to have a dead short somewhere to cause this problem. Before this happened, did you have the control box apart, or add an assesory to your to your harness. Many times, a problem like this is man made. Take a look also at your tilt & trim wire where it goes through the mounting bracket, see that it did'nt get scissored there.

Re: BURNED WIRING

The only thing I did prior to this incident was change the battery cables and I double checked them after to make sure they did not pinch anything or rub anything. Since the regulator tested bad is it possible that was the problem? The only other thing I noticed was the extra wiring from the control was looped very tightly and stuffed behind the knee brace by the transom. This was the bad spot I cut out. It was not worn through but could looping it tightly cause it to short??? My mechanic said the regulator could have caused this or a short could have caused the regulator to fry. Thanks.

Re: BURNED WIRING

I just wanted an idea of what else to check before I put a new regulator on and fry that one without solving the problem.

Hello
if you had a short that size you would see blown fuses and melted regulators. the only thing I have ever seen that burns the bonding wires is a bad battery connection or cable.I think you had or have a poor grond connection and the ground current is overloading the other wires. this is a problem I see fairly often, especially with multiple batteries. or you hooked your battery up backwards for a bit and fried something. I just had a customer with a new yammi F225 do that. popped all the fuses in the regulator circuit. double check the ground wire stud that screws into the crankcase cover for cleanliness and being tight. make sure the negative battery cable is in good repair and the ends are clean and tight. use an ohm meter to verify it.
good luck and keep posting

Re: BURNED WIRING

I will check that. I installed a battery shut off when I changed the cables this spring. I ran a new automotive battery cable from the positive terminal to the shutoff and connected the new evinrude cable from that to the engine. I did not know what to do with the negative cable so I ran another automotive cable from the battery to the negative evinrude cable and used a stainless steel bolt to connect the ends. I did not know of any other way to connect the two cables. The battery is only about 7' from the engine but the evinrude cables were 6' long... Thanks again
