Burned out motor?

I just bought a used motor to go on my jon boat. I had a 25 HP and bought a used 40 HP. When I left the landing everything was okay for a few minutes, then the engine cut off. I restarted it several times, but could never get it to run properly, it just limped along. Fortunately I was able to get a tow from someone and got it back to the baot landing. I pulled the cover to see if it might be something loose. I was shocked. My old motor had a pump for the 2 cycle oil with a reservoir. The motor they put on does not so I was running the motor on 100% gasoline for about 5-10 minutes. It will be Tuesday before I can get it to a shop, but am curious what to expect. I'm wondering if I should add the appropriate amount of 2 cycle oil to my tank, mix it up and try it again or take it to the shop. Is this engine completely ruined?

Could be. running it with no lubrication could have damaged the pistons and the bores, broken rings maybe and damaged bearings.

Only a total tear down will reveal the extent of the damage.

I cannot understand how you would run an engine without checking for oil in the reservoir. If you had checked you would have realised that there was not one and would have known to mix the oil with the gas. 50:1 I expect.

You could mix some oil and gas and give it a try. Perhaps a little bit extra oil for a while if it runs OK

There is an awfully good chance that it is ruined. It doesn't take very long without oil to destroy the pistons. You might luck out with the rest of it.

yep been there as fr said if it ran till shut down its probaly hurt
you may pull head and check play in piston and look for scored cyl walls
