Bunk replacement

I noticed last weekend that a rotted, small chunk of wood fell to the ground while I was hooking up the transdom straps. I could not figure out at first where it came from, then I looked at the bunk right above where it came from. The bunk is covered with some type of outdoor material & when I peeled it back a bit I saw the crappy rotted wood. What do I use to replace the bunks? Are the bunks like 2X4's covered in outdoor material? I guess I'll need to splash the boat & tie it up to the dock at the public launch & do it in the parking lot I guess. I don't know how I could do it at my house in the driveway with the boat on the trailer, any ideas??

Re: Bunk replacement

I need to work on my trailer pretty soon too.
I dont think leaving the boat at a public ramp is good idea.
I'm going to pay a daily docking fee at a local marina. The last thing I wanna be doing is worrying about my boat while I'm working on the trailer.

As the bunks themselves go... search some recent threads its been covered.
I have two bunks... they are 4 x 10 one peice of wood each.

How many bunks does your trialer have? If more than two, jack up the part of the boat that sits on the ones you want to replace and replace them. then jack up the other part of the boat and repeat.

Use a big hydrolic jack with wood on top of it to jack up.

There are only two bunks on the trailer. Ya, I thought about it after posting & I won't be leaving it at the public dock. I'll do a search (didn't even think before posting), & see what the deal is. Tanx guy's, MAXX------Just got back from search & lots of ideas. I'm not sure what way I'll get the boat off the trailer- drop & block in the driveway or leave it on the water- but I need to do it this weekend. Tanx again, MAXX

Re: Bunk replacement

I did mine at a local ramp not long ago. Dropped the boat, tied to the bank. And replaced the bunks in the paring lot (roughly 3 hours).

Be prepared for the job. I had all new bolts, boards pre-cut to size and pre-wrapped (1/2 done) with marine carpet. Oh yeah...take extra tools, rather have too many than not enough.

Re: Bunk replacement

I just did mine a few months ago, didn't want to use up half my boating day working on the trailer so I did the following. Very carefully measured the existing bunks that were on the trailer esp. bolt layout. Bought all needed materials, used carrige bolts that were pre sunk into the wood then capped with const adhesive. Once adhesive was dry I sealed the wood real well esp. the ends, once sealer was dry I wrapped with carpet using stainless staples. When I went to the lake I put the boat in, tied up to dock, removed old bunks (4) dropped new ones on, washers and nuts tightened. Took maybe 1/2 hr. and was finished worked awesome to have them all pre made so I just had to drop them on. Wife cleaned the boat while I was doing the trailer and we were off.

I agree with the above, it shouldn't take more than about 30 mins. Make sure that you have a battery powered drill w/good battery, a few appropriate size drill bits, socket set, wrench, hammer. You should be good to go.

And if you don't have a helper, a clamp or two comes in handy. While your at it, you may want to inspect rollers etc.

Re: Bunk replacement

All good ideas, I'll just need to decide what way best suits my needs for that day. Thanks, Maxx
