bunk materials

I need to replace both 2"x6"x10' bunks on my trailer. Went and looked for suitable materials at the local Home Depot. I assume a run of the mill 2x6 won't hold up very long. How about pressure treated or red wood? Or is there another (cheap) material that is better suited? Also, is outdoor carpet suitable for covering the bunks? Thanks in advance!

Re: bunk materials

I used PT Fir 2x6's and indoor/outdoor carpet from Home depot. I'm pretty sure they'll last more than a few years but they cost me about $10 each to make and only took a couple of hours. If they do go bad in a few years...no big deal.

Good luck!
Nikko

I used standard treated wood with indoor/outdoor carpet. Maybe some of the newer man made products would also work well?

I used the pressure treated 2x6 and indoor/outdoor carpet from Home Depot, going on 3 seasons now and no problems.

Make sure that you use staples that won't rust.

Thanks everyone for your input. That's just what I was hoping to hear.

Vlad- thanks for the staple tip.

I hadn't considered staple type yet. What kind of staples should be used, and are they easy to find? Are stainless steel staples common? Thanks!

I used galv. roofing nails and wrapped the carpet around the 2x6, nailing on the bottom...

Good luck!
Nikko
