BUG !!!! Anyone know what this little critter is?

About the 5th one I've found hopping around in my basement past month. As I get close it jumps about 3 feet away. I figured I'd snap this pic for identification just before I squashed him!

He's about the size of a dime. I only see one at a time. My basement is a damp one especially after a few days of heavy rain or in the spring.

I'd like to know what he is incase there is a nest of them or what I might spray or put around to kill them.

My guess is a Cricket, but they make no noise? They are always jet black in color.

Thx. How do I eliminate them? Do the have a short life cycle or is my basement going to be infested with them?

Around here anyhow they don't seem to "gang up" . Usually see them one at a time, don't do any damage I'm aware of.

Wooden toothpicks shaped into tiny stakes....... stake them through the heart like vampires!!!

Collect them, cage them, and feed them bread and water... then use them for Bluegill bait!!!

Also, if you ever find any "wolf" spiders in/around your house, don't kill 'em, they'll take care of your little 'critter' issues all by themselves )

Chinese consider a cricket in the house to be lucky.

you can spray around the outside of your foundation with insect repellant and it will keep them out.

Just thought of something a neighbor taught me when I first bought my house... now keep in mind, I do NOT know if this would work for crickets or not... Anyhow, this old-timer (who has owned/operated a large wood shop for 30+yrs) told me that an old trick he has used for many years around wood structures or those that contain lots of wood/wood chips is to pour a small amount of used motor oil all around the foundation to keep out carpenter ants and termites... Now, let the environmentalists chime in and set me on fire.. lol

Nope. The used motor oil is a lot better than the pesticides we used to use. Motor oil actually breaks down in a reasonable time frame....

Update: I read where the cricket is part of the roach family. So I sprayed ant and roach killer around the perimeter of the basement. I have only seen one baby sized field cricket since and my boot sent him to that great cockroach in the sky!

I never heard any noise from these particular field crickets. Years ago, at another house some noisy black crickets got into my basement and drove me crazy with their constant chirping.

You can also stab each one on to a little spear and plant their tiny carcasses around the perimeter of your basement as a warning to all the other insects to keep out or suffer the same fate!!

Duct tape. Lay it out sticky side up. There is something about it that attracts them, then they stick to it and die.

Lay out a mixture of sand and beer wherever you find them.

They'll get drunk and beat each other with rocks. Takes about a week to get rid of 'em.

thats exactly what happens around here at a beach party! must be something about that sand and beer combo??
