Just bought a 1997 luhrs 320 convertible with marine power 454 PFI’s, putting new long blocks into it and I am wanting to communicate with the MEFI’s confirm they are reading sensor info, get trouble codes, set timing etc. I have read the manual for these but it does not reference a part number for the MDTC tool.

Any suggestions on a tool? Not wanting to spend a fortune as this is a personal project and not a business expense.

Do you have TBI or MPI?

I have a Rinda Diacom for two of the boats I have. It may be overlkill for your engine since there aren't that many parameters. The blinking light is goo if there are codes set but it won't tell you the following which the Rinda Diacom will tell you. Might be too expensive a tool for your age engines. Very valuable for me as it has saved me countless hours diagnosing things.

Even for your boat, it can be an easier way to put it into base timing mode to set timing.

  • Engine RPM
  • MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure)
  • TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)
  • ECT (Engine Coolant Temp
  • IAT/MAT (Intake/Manifold Air Temp
  • Battery Voltage
  • IAC Position (Idle Air Control)
  • Knock Retard
There is also a Rinda scanner called TechMate Pro. That might actually satisfy your requirements. Depending on what adapters you choose, it might save you a few dollars but the Diacom would always be my choice because it shows on a laptop screen.

+1 for the Rinda Diacom. It usually pays for itself on the first issue of trouble/repair . . . rather than using the proverbial parts cannon.
