My boat engine knowledge is extremely limited, so I thought I'd canvas for some opinions.

Just completed last boat ride of the year. I've owned my '95 3.0L Mercruiser for two years. No problems until today.

Left the dock and motor ran very rough, almost stalled a few times. When motor was running, brown smoke was coming from the exhaust. I immediatly shut off the motor and made for the dock (paddles).

Let the boat sit for about five minutes, started it up, ran great. Cruised for two hours, no problems. Took the boat to marina mechanic to winterize it. His quick opinion was I picked something up at the dock that blocked the water intake.

Anyone else? I had just finished filling the gas tank, and engine oil level was perfect.

Re: brown smoke

just had the same thing, brown exhaust, and some fuel visible around the outdrive --- brown smoke only when starting, but fuel on water both when starting and after returning from a boat ride??? Seems like too much fuel at idle.

Yea but at least he's doing some research and reading for himself. Took me a couple of seconds to figure out the October 1st reference until I saw the year.
