The wife may kill me, but what the heck  .

Johnson 50ESL72C, 1972 I believe. I can only hope this was a smart buy at $400, with a spare motor and a half, 2 spare props, and spare controls. Compression hasn't been tested, but it was a friend who sold it to me, I've ridden in his boat with this motor last fall and it ran very well... and he's the shop-foreman at the local chevy dealer... I trust him, but will do a test soon just to have a record at time of purchase. I'm putting it on a 1961 16' Crestliner, it's either a "Del Rio" or a "Flying Crest". Not sure of the model, no tags but have narrowed it down to those two model possibilities.

Are there any know issues I need to be aware about, any tips on a once-over before I get it out on the water?

And does anyone have an owners manual for this model?

Thanks in advance for your expert advice in this matter....

Offhand, the only thing I think you have to be aware of is that this is an electric shift motor. Requires a different type of gear lube (Type C if I recall), and replacements for either the controls or the shift solenoids are hard to come by. If you have a second set of controls with the push-button shift, treat this as gold, as those controls are difficult to find in working conditions.

I had the evinrude version of this motor and it ran well right up to the point where it blew a piece of the piston skirt through the crank case. I had it on the back of a 15' fiberglass tri-hull. It was a little small for the boat, but would get it on plane once I propped it correctly.

Another little "gotcha" I remember with this motor is if you need to replace the thermostat, you need to pull the head.

Good luck

Ok... thanks Eric. Here's hoping the T-stat is ok...
