found out this weekend that my new brother in law can't drive or back a trailer. first on the way back to the dock my sister and brother in law ask if they can do anything to help. i know my sis cant back the trailer so i look at him and ask him. father has a farm so i assume he can back trailer. he says yes so i let him off to get truck. as he backs down the ramp he gets a little crooked. im thinking not too bad. as he gets in the water as far as i want him i wave to stop. he backs in farther. he figures out what im trying to signal him and pulls completly out of the water. this time as he backs down he gets crossways of the ramp. finally in the water i get the boat on the trailer. i shut off motor and raise drive. as i walk to front to hook winch strap he lets truck roll back and boat floats off trailer. i go back and drop drive and idle back on. get stap on bow eye and signal for him to pull out. i realized about the time he hits the gas that he is still in reverse. truck stops with bumper in water. he is so rattled at this point that he puts it in drive and steps on the gas hard. tires spin and water flys. finally at the top of the ramp i tell him to pull over to his truck and we will unload. think the story ends here? i did too. as we pull around we have to make a turn. he evidently forgot that he had a boat behind him. as he makes the turn i realize he is turning too sharp and is about to hit a tree with the boat. i yell to stop and he stops in time to not hit tree but left wheels have dropped off pavement. this drop is about 6-8 inches. he gets out and says he is done and i agree with him. i start to back up but trailer frame starts to drag on pavement. i pull forward as much as i can but can't clear tree. after several forward and back i work boat over enough to clear tree. decided brother in law will only ride in boat from now on.

Sounds like a good decision, I have a BOL kinda like that. Part of me wants to teach him to do things, but part of me doesn't want to teach him with my nice things.

Think he was maybe thrown in at the deep end. Simpler tasks may have brought better results and some agreed upon signals for what the instructions were to be.
Having said that I have identical twin brother in law's aged 55 that would need instructions and some intense training on which way to turn a screwdriver to get the desired result.

Yes assuming will get ya in trouble. My buddies uncle assumed that putting a note on the kitchen table at the family cottage and also on the steering wheel of the pontoon that it was not peeing very well would do. NOT. His brother in-law still took it out and ran it with the temp alarm going until it died. Glad you did not have any major damage.

We have all done it and hopefully learned from our mistake. I certainly have and that is why I posted what I did. I am just glad that you came away unscathed both personally and your outfit.
Happy Boating.
Ken.

Re: brother in law can't back trailer

Same thing here.We beached next to our campsite for easy access. I take boat to ramp ,he(brother in law) takes truck.Tries to back down ramp 3-4 times without success( sigh) and people are starting to get irritated waiting for him to get it done, nevermind the fact that this is a 5 lane ramp. I have to tie off and do it my self.......longest loading experience of my boating career.

Four wheel wagon VS two wheeled trailer. I see the tandem axels but there is no steering axle.
The two back completely different.

Yes I am a farmboy.

Just a thought on why he can't back a boat trailer...:)

Wouldn't it be fun to watch Brown back a hay wagon?

My Dad used to be able to back two of them. I never could figure out how he did it. But then again he had been doing it for almost 30 years then. Would be close to 50 years now.

Re: brother in law can't back trailer

the first few times i tried backing our trailer into river i had a hell of time.

very embarassing on a hot, busy, summer boat ramp. 1 guy offered to help, i told him i have a 31ft. camper i could back onto the dock , but cant figure out this boat trailer! i just needed to slow down and think, now i have no problems.

Re: brother in law can't back trailer

My dad nearly backs me off the side of the ramp every time he backs me in. I always have to signal for him to get my back end pointed straight. Back when he had his boat the same length as mine he could do 30mph for half a mile in reverse. Saw him do that one time when he went the wrong way in a campground with no place to turn around. He's simply lost his touch over the years and won't let me back his pop-up camper where it needs to be because he's too prideful.
