Re: broken something

Welcome to Iboats, redstripe!

It looks like the top part of the top main bearing, the part the armature plate swivels on, and the main top seal presses into. Is it? Did the flywheel contact the ignition coils while it was running?

If so, you have to split the engine to replace it. It's not a massive task, you just need a few new gaskets, torque wrench, manual and some sealants to do it. You might run into trouble finding someone to work on your older outboard though.

The bearing sells for around $60 I think. You could use a good used one too.

Re: broken something

It doesn't spin itself. The part that's broken is just a protrusion from the outer housing of the top crank bearing. On my left picture, you can see the rollers in it which roll directly on the crankshaft. So I guess you could say that the crankshaft spins inside it, but that's all.

To dissassemble the engine, you'll have to first remove it from the rest of the outboard - pop the starter and generator bracket off first, as well as the throttle arm. Then pull the carb off, the manifold, and the reed plate. An impact screwdriver (<$20 from discount tool suppliers) is really helpful here. Then you drive out the two tapered alignment pin from the thin side, remove the crankcase bolts, and the main crankcase bolts. You'll need a 5/16" allen socket for the centre main bolts. You could use an allen key, but you'll need to torque these bolts later with a torque wrench.

Then you can split the case and pull off the main bearing with your fingers. You'll want a new top main seal to go with your replacement bearing. There's no need to remove the head, pistons, connecting rods, etc.

I don't think you could possibly have broken it pulling the flywheel, unless you somehow really crunched the armature plate. That's some seriously tough steel that's broken there. For the future, it's best to rap on the center bolt of the puller rather than the flywheel itself - it works much better. and doesn't hurt the flywheel.

Re: broken something

Your welcome. :)

I don't think you'll find any place advertising them online. You're going to have to fire off some emails. Try these places for new ones:
maxrules.com
laingsoutboards.com
theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com
If they don't have them new, they'll have used ones. That bearing was used for years on a number of engines. I belive that seal and bearing is no longer available from the dealer, but there should be lots of them out there. And I think the seal is available aftermarket.

You need to check e-bay as well. Often can get as good as new or new parts there. And at times much cheaper. If you cant find what you want, in a search at ebay . Find one of the larger dealers , by clicking on a part, then go to there store or email them. Theres one seller there , goes by dadsboatparts , or real close to that. He's a great guy, very helpfull. Also has alot of parts.
Good_luck,
KYHunter
