broken skeg

'75 johnson 50 hp. Noticed after last season that a 1" "bite" was missing from the bottom of the skeg. May have happened when my brother hit a rock or when he pulled her for the season. Will this adversely affect the operation or handling of the motor? Motor is on a 15' starcraft used for transportation. Thanks.

It does not have much effect on the engine performance.Although you could possibly get some vibration.<br />Skegs are there to prevent damage to the prop in case you hit a rock.(you can move with a chipped skeg,with a broken prop you are stuck)<br />If the damage endangers the well being of the prop, then you should have it repaired.

If your not experinceing steering torque it's alright
