I DISCOVERED A SMALL (ONE INCH BY 3/8 INCH) BROKEN OFF OF MY SKEG,LUCKILY I HAVE THE PIECE, CAN IT BE PUT BACK WITH EPOXY OR SHOULD IT BE WELDED? NEEDLESS TO SAY I CRIED A LONG TIME AS IT WAS BRAND NEW AND HAD NEVER BEEN IN THE WATER.

Re: BROKEN SKEG/HOW TO FIX

Thats gotta hurt...

If its that small and not part of the gear case, I'd leave it alone. Its only cosmetic at this point and proper repair wouldn't be feasable. Next time you strip it down to put seals in the lower unit, take it to a propshop and have them weld that piece back on. (epoxy will just break off)You'll probably have a few more missing by then anyways..... :)

Re: BROKEN SKEG/HOW TO FIX

i can't really help you much but to say welding better than epoxy cause not nuff surface area for glue to bond well. but may be some epoxy putty like'' jb weld''mite work an smooth it on the outside surface, too.. i have some '' carbon fibre '' that i use to imbed into epoxy resin/putty for an INCREDIABLE STRENGHT BONDING OF ANYTHING !! this carbon fibre stuff is incrediable space age stuff ...

Howdy, Wooly Bugger.

A simple and easy fix that doesn't involve heating the oil-filled foot is to install a SkegGard.

It is a Stainless steel sleeve that covers and protects the skeg and can absorb a lot of punishment without breaking. I have them on all my skegs.

Check Cabelas.com. About $100.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)
