broken shift linkage screw

first and fore-most i apogize to those i may have irritated on this site, i have eaten enough humble pie for everyone. that being said i am trying to replace an impeller on a 110hp johnson vro it appears that someone before myself has broken the head off the linkage screw. any suggestions? in some posts it advises to remove the carb but in looking at it it would appear i may have to pull the head up as there isnt much room. anything i should be aware of? yes i have ordered a book, and yes the library has one in the system, but in a box some where un-be knownest to anyone, but they assured me they have a repair manual for a mercury that is available!. i plan on taking my time and doing the job right so any advice is greatly appreciated. as i stated earlier i put my foot in my mouth sevral times for which i apologize!.<br /> THANKS <br />TED<br />Common sense ain't common. <br />Will Rogers:

Start by going to the BRP parts catalogs and looking up your motor. Click here: BRP Parts Catalog<br /><br />You can then look up the parts and part numbers that you will need.

Ted...you even need to release the shift rod to lift the head because the shift lever is attached to the intake manifold. Try removeing the carbs first. Remove both of them. If the head of the pin bolt is broken off, that could be a dandy to fix. Is there any thing left of the head....anything to grab onto? What's the year of the engine?<br /><br />EDIT: Let me throw in another thought here. If there is room, after you take the carbs off, you can get to the bolt that holds the shift lever to the shift shaft. If there is room in the pan, you can pull the shift shaft out far enough to release the shift lever. This would let you pull the block from the midsection. Then all you would need to do is unscrew the shfit shaft out of the lower unit and pull it out. If this is the way you would have to go, drain the lower unit gear lube first before removing the shift shaft....or you will have gear lube under foot.<br /><br />But let's hope for the best and you can get the pin screw out with just removing the carbs.

OBJ<br />thanks for the info!<br />if i understood you correctly, assuming i can get the top part of the shift rod loose enough to rotate. the shift rod can then be un-threaded from the lwr unit. <br />thanks agin<br />ted<br /><br />its a 1988 110hp vro. I will have to remove the carbs to get a good view, without doing that its all guess work.

Ted....just hang on there before you start tearing carbs apart. If this is an 88' year, look on the starboard side of the shift lever in the lower pan and see if you see a hitch pin through the shift shaft. If you do, you are home free cause all you need to do is pul the pin towards the port side and the shift rod will come lose. We was going on the assumption you had an earlier year engine.
