While pulling my motor mounts from my boat last night,I managed to break off one of the bolts in the stringer. How can I get this out ?The bolts are like 4 inches long and pretty big around. Will an easy out even work on this? I dont seem to have very good luck with east outs.I have one broken off in a small bolt in my outdrive right now.@#$%&!!Does anyone know if bayliner puts something on these bolts that go into the stringer? Is there something I can let soak in befor attempting to remove this with an easy-out? Any help? Thanks.

Re: Broken motor mount bolt help

Got a picture? Don't think soaking it will do any good as the issue is not metal to metal rust. I speculate that the lags were not stainless and just rusted thru. You may need to get a hole saw, without the centering bit, drill down over the bolt, then refill the hole with epoxy and redrill for your new stainless steel lag bolt.

You might get away with just coring down an inch or so, chisel or grind out the wood to expose the top of the broken lag, you might then be able to get a set of vice grips on it and turn it out.

As I am typing, I am wondering if carefully applying a thin propane torch flame on the top of the exposed lag, letting it super heat the lag before trying to back it out.

Maybe someone will come up with something simpler, but those lags are too tough to try to drill out.
