broken latch on 2001 30hp 4-stoke mercury engine cover

The latch on my mercury2001 30 hp 4-stroke engine cover has broken and I cannot get the cover off. Is there some trick to getting it off without going to the shop.The latch is still on there but it just rotates easily and you can feel something still attached to the other side that prevents the latch piece from coming off.

I'm no locksmith, but a pry may help. The cowls do have some give, and you might get a screwdriver in there to
unlatch it.
