Working on an old Merc drive for a friend . . . The starboard one came out reasonably easy, and then I was cranking on the port one when I heard a "crack":

Yes, correct tool and I had not put any heat to it yet. Thoughts on getting this out? Any chance without welding something to it? Yes, salt and carp maintenance.

Won't the tool hold?......
Put some heat on there to break the loctite......;)
They do have some pretty fierce torque......:)
I'd spray some kroil on the outside, too......
With the difference of metals in the pin & bellhousing, heat will help alot....
What's pre Alpha about it?.....
At least ya don't have the ones with pins in 'em.......

Tool won't hold now. The crack opened it up some I guess . . . Yeah, I screwed up not heating it first, but the starboard one put me to sleep. S/N is pre-Alpha 5915863

That'll teach ya......:(
I'd drill it & try a big EZ out....
Worst case scenario is you screw up the bell housing & would have to replace it......
I don't know if I would weld anything there, if you screw up the gimbal ring......:eek::eek:
If your careful you won't.....
Ya have the other pin so you see the size ya need.....
A cobalt bit will go through it (don't ask how I know)....
Just get a good center hole to start...
Don't forget the heat though, ya still got loctite on there....
How about a larger size Allen key or maybe a metric size?....
Just a thought......:)

This thread made me think weld. I'll heat and try large allen. Hinge pin tool is a little rounded now too, but I heard that crack and you can see that it broke, that's why I was going stright to welding . . .

I'd still drill as big a hole as I could through it, without jeopardizing damage to the gimbal ring to relieve pressure, do the heat thing & try something bigger to get a grip......
& some Kroil for thr smooth part......
I'm assuming new bellows is in the near future anyway....
Then weld something on if all else fails.....:)

Yeah, that's the goal anyway . . . Thanks. I got the other one out and heading to buy a bit soon. I just heated and tried a few things, but nada . . . Don't really have anything but the tool though, so the drill and easy out is prolly the best next step.

I'd drill it & heat it & try a bigger allen or such.....
If ya break an easy out in there ......:(

me? I would go straight to welding in a piece of 1/2" hex stock and remove it.
the heat from the weld will most likly break the loc tite.
I would still keep my oxy/acytelyne rig handy :).
any day I can play with the flame is a good day :).

Re: Broken hinge pin - Pre Alpha

Go it!!! Holy carp. I was impatient and didn't want to wait for my buddy with weld stuff, so I went and bought this No. 6 Easy out type deal which uses a 13/32 pilot  Drilling was a bear, but what worked out best was a 3/8 drill followed by the 13/32 . . . Seems odd that 1/32 would make such a difference, but the 3/8 bit (same hardness and company, same set) was churning out the filings and the 13/32 sucked wind . . . Anyway, had to use a big arse open end adjustable to get a good grip on the easy out and still had to put a big breaker bar on it. This is after heat cycling with a torch and water about six times. I finally started hearing it cracking an creaking from the heat, and then the tool was getting a good bite and then eeeeechh, a little movement. I am worn out!!! Thanks for the ideas.

Yeah, I removed the easy-out from the bolt this AM. I didn't realize it yesterday, but I drilled within 1/4 inch of the end and there were some marks at the bottom from the easy-out, so it got waaaaay down in there and got a good bite. Cool.

BTW, that was a Kobalt easy thingee from Lowe's. No 6. Not a mark on it today. Awesome hardness I guess.
