I just did a search for broken C-head bolts and all I can say is....Oh my fricken head hurts.

2-bolts broke while removing the cylinder heads and it appears I'm going to have a job removing them. The head are showing blockage at the smaller water holes near the center of each head.

Whats the best way to clean these heads? Can I re-use the head bolts or all new? And finally, can I expect the Cylinder head cover botls to break also when I attempt to remove?

With out heat from a torch of some kind with and Oxy-Ace Torch being best your going to break a LOT of bolts

Sometimes it can take 30 minutes or more to get one bolt out but its still much faster than drilling if you break it

Re: Broken Cylinder Head bolts

You can see from my post "88 Suzuki 150hp overheating", where there are more posts today that I've been having overheat problems, including breaking off several bolts. Did you determine the heads were showing blockage at the smaller water holes near the center of each head before pulling, and if so,how?

Would you have learned about your blockage problem by just removing the cylinder head covers?

My understanding that removing any of these fasteners from older engines, more so if used in salt water, can be a problem.

Good luck and please review mine and let me know if you have any thoughts.

thanks

Re: Broken Cylinder Head bolts

Thanks Sunpacman. Couple more questions.

Would you have seen the blockages by just removing the cylinder head cover and if so, would you have been able to clean out sufficiently, avoiding removal of the head itself? Since assume the c- head cover must be removed to properly clean the head, is it best to first remove cover before removing the head from engine?

Did you use heat on the c-head bolts and if so what type? Did you follow the manual directions of lossening each bolt half turn at a time, in a crisscross pattern to prevent warpage, or was that impossible?

Is the sandblasting suppose to clean out all the waterways or will you still have substantial cleaning to do yourself? What type of shop is doing the sandblasting...a machine shop, or?

Did you pull off any other major components besides the c-head(s) and if so which ones? Any special tools required?

What were your overheat problems that prompted the c-head removal?

Re: Broken Cylinder Head bolts

I was able to get one of the bolts out however the other bolt required a Heli-coil. The heads were slightly warped so I had them squared on at a maching shop. Before I go through the heart ache of putting back on, is it common to shave the heads on outboards. We to very little off but clearly they could not have gone back on in the condition they were in...

What about the cover, does it need sealer. It appears as though it does not sit square when placed gently on the head.

Also, what about the block and cleaning old material?

Thanks for you continued support....
