Was hoping for a day of fishing, instead I got a $150 fladbed tow back to my driveway. :(

Anyway, I broke my axle on my trailer and are looking to replace it. Some Q's:

1. Thinking of replacing w/ a Reliable Axle brand. Anyone had any experience with them?

2. Is there any way to tell the weight rating of the old axle? I have a 17' Bass Boat w/ 70 Rude motor. I'm guessing the rig is under 2,500 lbs. Is this a safe assumption? If so, I'll get an axle rated at 3,500 to be on the safe side.

3. While I'm at it, going to replace the hubs/ grease fittings. Any recommendations on brands?

Thanks in advance.
KF

Re: Broken Axle

Thanks, I gave them a call. They only have certain sizes, and not the length I need. Got a call into Reliable Tool to see if they can make a 'Custom' Length.

Other ideas welcome.

Thanks,
KF

Re: Broken Axle

A while back I had a problem somewhat like yours. I needed a longer axle than the standard length. What I did was cut the axle into in the center (the axle was round). I had a machinest friend bore a sleeve for me that would slip over the axle ends then I inserted both axle ends and welded the sleeve.
An idea in your case that might save you some money is get just the hub assemblies from Northern tool. Take them to a welding shop and have them weld the assemblies to a piece of square stock or round stock the right length.

Good luck, :)

a3dad:

Go to www.championtrailers.com. If they don't have what you need they can make it for you. Plus the Spindle Lube system on their hubs will make servicing your bearings much easier.

Dutch

Re: Broken Axle

Dutch, Thanks. I also found trailer parts at web page.

Champion only has square axles. My current axle is made from round stock. Can you replace a round axle with a square one?

KF

Yes you can replace the round axle with a square one but you will need the U-Boltls that hold your springs for the square axle.

Re: Broken Axle

Just a follow-up on this thread...

I purchased my new axle from Champion Trailers http://www.championtrailers.com. I found several places that offered axle parts, but some had to be welded, etc. This place allowed me to order exactly want I wanted, build it to by specs, shipped it fully assembled, greased & mounted hubs, and ready to bolt onto my trailer.

Great experience. Would recommend them next time someone need a trailer part.

a3dad:

Glad to know they took care of you. If you go to championstrailers website you can also order a free catalog from them. Some things are too high but if you need anything down the line you'll have one more place to look for a solution.

Dutch
