broke the spline section off of upper drive shaft, how do i get it out?

I have a merc 150 hp outboard that I was testing after rebuilding fuel pump. when all of a sudden it quit pumping water out of the phole and the propellar wouldn't spin.(yes I did have ear muffs on it) When I pulled the lower unit off thinking it was something wrong with the impellar, I saw that the spline section of the upper drive shaft had broken off in the motor. I've tried to take the section of the motor off above the lower unit so I can remove the broken piece. But I can't figure out how to get it off, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Leave the midsection alone,remove the powerhead.

Thanks didn't think of that, will try it later this afternoon. Any tricks or special things I should know cause I've never done that before.

A mercury shop manuel is a good start.Assuming you don't have one take lots of pictures

Seems strange to be running fine and pumping water one second and the shear off a drive shaft without load or warning while in neutral and on muffs...
Do you have a picture of the broken shaft?

Hate to admit it, but I did rev it up to full throttle for just a second before that.
So anybody else reading this please learn to not put a load on it when out of the water.

Thanks to the help, I got it apart and got the broken part of the shaft out. Did take pics but need my daughters help to load them on computer. Just have to reseal everything, replace a few parts and put it back together. But I'll never throttle it up again without a load tester or out of the water again.
To everyone out there this has been a very time consuming and expensive experience just to hear the motor rev up.

Learning the hard way can be very expensive, but you will never forget it. I've learned a few the same way so you are not alone.

Candyman, I doubt a no load high speed would have broken a driveshaft. I recommend you check the gearcase for seizure.
