Was in a hurry to get off the water and had a severe lapse. Pulled the boat off the ramp w/ the alpha drive still down. Hit the cement and broke off about 3" of rudder from the bottom of the gear housing behind prop.
Can this be welded? If I needed to have the housing replaced what would be a reasonable cost (I assume it wouldn't be cheap).

You can do one of three things...Leave it alone. The skeg is there to protect the propeller and will not affect preformance. Or you can carry it to a prop shop and have a new one welded on. Last but not least you can install a skeg guard in a few min. and forget it.
And you are perfectly right about the housing. It is not cheap.

Around these parts...if you remove the gear case yourself, you can take it to a local prop repair shop and they'll build up a new skeg for around $60.00. Then ya gotta spring another $9.00 for a bottle of new gear lube.

Walt

Just be sure the break was low enough that water is not entering the lower unit shell. You don't want to buy a new lower unit shell at $500.+++
