i have a 40 plus british seagul and it wont start it was running before and i just took it out onto the stand started it and it gave a sign of starting so i gave it another pull and no start. even with ether spray in carbie an spark hole it would start but run for 3 seconds. i thought these motors were the best outboard motor for the world! and i was wondering if thicker oil than sae 90 for gearboxes existed and what is it called?
thanks

Gear oil should be SAE 140 unless in coldest conditions then use SAE 90.

Has it got fuel? Is the fuel line tap open? Has the spark plug wire fallen off?
That was straight from the manual.

Sometimes these can be trempremental wee motors, if they've been running and warmed up they can present difficulty starting. One has to adjust the manner by which one proceedes.
Ross

Check your carb for varnish. After each use, shut off the petcock and let the motor run until it uses-up the gas in the carb. Use a fuel stabilizer year-round. That little guy probably doesn't burn up a supply of gas before it starts to go stale. I have two Seagulls hanging in my garage myself. One of these days I'll get them running. The powerheads look pretty much the same, but one has a much larger gearcase than the other.

No ether. Very dangerous for 2 strokes.

Go to Engine FAQs and do the troubleshooting in "Outboard wont start".

Good luck. :)
