on the briggs motors i hear everyone talking about how loud they are. i dont understand why the exaust of these motors cant be wrapped along the leg and under the water like the old gamefishers. Just take the muffler off and bend some pipe. Anyone ever tried this???

I think the restriction would cause overheating. As I understand it the factory is concerned about overheating when trolling as it is.

Could also be to prevent nasty burns. Other air cooled outboards like Eskas that used below the water line exhaust and air cooled engines had to have conventional outboard water pumps to run cooling water into the exhaust. Presumably Briggs & Stratton would have to contend with the same problems.

Lol! Hey, if you like the B&S, then buy it: you don't need our permission. :)
Personally I would go for a used 80s-90s 6hp or 7.5hp Johnny/Rude or even a '60s-'70s 6hp Johnny/Rude. But then again I have an electric lawnmower. Chacon son gout! :)

Don't freak out either when you blow a head gasket from the excessive exhaust pressure, or when you suck water back up into the engine when it kicks back on shut down. Try getting a better muffler. They do sell them and they are quite a bit quieter, and safer.

hey really?...where might those better mufflers be sold?
A wee bit quieter and I would probably keep my briggs... I am thinking of ditching it, but it has a lot of advantages like no w/p to worry about....

any info appreciated on the muffler

You need to be careful about muffler back pressure when replacing the muffler.I wonder if simply aiming the muffler away from the boat or down toward the water might help the sound some.
I don't know what it looks like but maybe a tube of sheet metal hose clamped to the muffler just to get the sound a few more inches away from your ears and to make it harder for the sound to radiate back toward the boat. The results might be surprising and the tube could be easily removed for transport.Maybe some holes near the base of the tube would allow the exhaust to draw in some cool air as it rushes passed thus cushioning the exhaust pulses some??
